Together with SignLab Amsterdam we develop the technology to translate text to sign language using animated avatars. Machine translation systems using avatar technology could support communication between deaf and hearing people when human sign language interpreters are unavailable. They could also provide sign language users with easier access to written and spoken information and assist in learning sign language.
While qualified human sign language interpreters should always be preferred for face-to-face interactions, it is valuable to explore how avatar technology can assist in situations where human interpreters cannot be used or for purposes beyond face-to-face communication.
